The Gordian Knot 2 Oz 2000 CFA Francs Silver Coin Cameroon 2021

The Gordian Knot is the symbol of a problem that cannot be solved by ordinary means. The oracle declared that whoever untied the knot of Gordion would rule all of Asia. No one succeeded until Alexander the Great arrived – and simply cut it with his sword. The Mint of Poland captured this legend in two ounces of Ag 999 silver, with an antique finish, high relief and a gilded sword. Only 500 pieces were minted.

Reverse – the unsolvable knot and the golden sword

The centre of the reverse is filled with a dense tangle of snakes and ropes, sculpted in high relief so that every scale and every crossing can be felt under your fingers. Above the knot rises a serpent's head – the ouroboros, the snake devouring its own tail, one of the symbols of the Gordian Knot. Right through the middle runs Alexander's selectively gilded sword. The background is a map of the ancient world with the names of lands and cities: Egypt, Arabia, Babylon, Sparta. The patinated, matte antique surface brings out the depth of the relief and contrasts strongly with the gold.

Obverse – Alexander the Great

The obverse shows the profile of Alexander the Great in a plumed helmet, framed by a wave and pearl ornament. Around it are the inscriptions REPUBLIQUE DU CAMEROUN, the year 2021 and the face value 2000 FRANCS CFA.
