A gaze that turns flesh to stone

A hiss breaks the silence. Snakes frame a face no mortal dares to look upon – one glance, and flesh turns to stone. This is Medusa, one of the three Gorgons. Facing her seems impossible, yet this is exactly the task given to Perseus, son of Zeus and Danaë.

He was sent by King Polydectes, who desired Danaë and wanted to get rid of her son, certain he would never return. But Perseus had more than courage – he could think clearly when fear urged him to act. Using the reflection in his shield, he saw what he could not face directly. Their eyes never met, and victory was his. The severed head kept its power: Medusa's image, the gorgoneion, later adorned shields, temples and coins as a symbol of protection.

Coin design

The reverse shows Perseus in gilded armour, a red cloak and a winged helmet, raising Medusa's head with its coloured snakes. In his other hand he holds a gilded curved sword, beside a shield with a Greek key border and the Gorgon's image. Behind him, among the ruins of an ancient building, stands a warrior turned to stone, his arm raised in vain defence. The 2 mm high relief and antique finish give the scene depth and drama.

The obverse features the coat of arms of Cameroon on an ornate crowned shield, the year 2026, the inscription PERSEUS & MEDUSA, the face value 2000 FRANCS CFA, 2 OZ. and AG 999, and the T&S Coin mark.
