A dance that intimidates the enemy

The haka is the traditional war dance of the Maori – the indigenous people of New Zealand. Rhythmic stamping, slapping the body, fierce faces, wide eyes and an outstretched tongue were meant to give warriors courage and frighten the enemy. The haka is still performed at important ceremonies, and the whole world knows it from the All Blacks rugby team, who perform it before every match.

The design

The obverse shows a Maori warrior at the peak of the dance: legs wide apart, arms tensed and his face covered with traditional moko tattoos. The figure is struck in high relief that brings out every muscle and every pattern on the skin. The warrior's belt is set with a red insert, and the whole scene is framed by Maori spiral ornaments and the letters HAKA.

The reverse shows the coat of arms of the Republic of Cameroon, the inscription WORLD CULTURES, the face value of 2000 CFA francs, a carved Maori meeting house and a face with moko tattoos.
