King of the Arctic

The polar bear is the largest land carnivore on Earth and one of the most iconic symbols of the Arctic. Although we picture it on ice and snow, it is also an excellent swimmer, able to cover very long distances in water. To hunt seals, however, it needs sea ice – which is why the shrinking Arctic ice cover is one of its greatest threats. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists it as a vulnerable species.
