The terror of the Caribbean

Edward Teach, known as Blackbeard, was the most feared pirate of the Golden Age of Piracy. Aboard the Queen Anne's Revenge he spread terror along the American coast, and legend says he wove slow-burning fuses into his beard before battle. This coin is a tribute to his fearsome appearance.

Coin design

Blackbeard stands aboard his ship, with a barrel of overflowing skulls behind him. Across his chest hangs a sling of pistols, daggers hang from his waist and he holds his knife at the ready. In the background is a close-up of his severe face and infamous beard, every strand rendered with precise engraving. This version is finished entirely in antique silver – both the face and the pirate figure. The obverse bears the coat of arms of the Republic of Chad, the year 2021 and the face value 10000 FRANCS CFA.

Bi-Metal Reverse technique

The coin is made with a new minting technique: a base of 2 oz of 999 pure silver with a top layer of 11.5 oz of copper. This gives a total weight of 13.5 oz and an 80 mm diameter – double the size of a regular 2 oz coin – while the super ultra high relief brings out every detail. It is finished in antique silver.
