The Meteorite Art series continues with the fourth issue dedicated to one of
the largest meteorites in the world. This impressive coin is struck of 170 g of
silver and features a real piece of Campo del Cielo meteorite, embedded into a relief reverse with a detailed image of a crater. Campo del Cielo or “The
Field of Heaven” is an impact site of eponymous meteorite which crashed into
the Earth’s surface 4000 – 5000 years ago. This catastrophic event was
probably witnessed by local tribes, leaving its trace in their legends. The
strewn field of meteorite debris covered an area of 60 km meaning that the
cosmic body exploded in atmosphere and shattered to thousands of pieces.
