The African Big Five are the five animals hunters once considered the hardest and most dangerous to hunt: the lion, elephant, rhino, leopard and African buffalo. The leopard is the most secretive of them all – it hunts at night, moves without a sound and can drag its prey high into a tree. Spotting one on safari is a real stroke of luck. The Mauquoy high relief series pays tribute to these animals and is one of the most sought-after wildlife series of recent years. The 2018 Leopard is the third coin in the series.

The design

The reverse shows the face of a leopard looking straight at the viewer. Its spots, whiskers and gaze are rendered in great detail, and the ultra high relief makes the coin look like a small sculpture from the side. The antique finish brings out the texture of the fur. Around it: MAUQUOY HAUT-RELIEF, LEOPARD and 5 OZ .999 AG.

The obverse bears the coat of arms of Ivory Coast with the elephant head, palm trees and rising sun, the inscription RÉPUBLIQUE DE CÔTE D'IVOIRE, the year 2018 and the face value 5000 FRANCS CFA.
