Collector Coin Mints – Mint of Poland, Royal Krakow Mint and More

A silver coin from Niue or Cameroon bears the name of a country, but several companies usually stand behind it: the issuer, the mint and often a publisher who came up with the design. When you choose a coin for your collection, it is worth knowing who made it – this affects the quality of the strike, the finishing techniques and how well the coin is recognised by collectors. Below you will find an overview of the mints and brands whose coins most often appear in our shop.

Issuer, mint, publisher – who is who?

  • The issuer is the country or central bank that gives the coin its face value and legal tender status – e.g. Niue, Samoa, Cameroon or Malta. Its name and denomination (e.g. 5 dollars, 2000 CFA francs) appear on the obverse.
  • The mint is the facility that physically strikes the coin: it prepares the blanks, dies and finish.
  • The publisher (brand) is the company that creates the series, designs the coins, orders their production and sells them to collectors. Sometimes the publisher and the mint are the same company, sometimes not.

That is why a “Niue 2026” coin may come from Poland, Lithuania or Singapore. Are such coins real money? We explain in Niue, Tuvalu and Cook Islands coins – are they real money? To learn how a collectible coin differs from a bullion coin, read Collectible coin – what is it?

Mint of Poland (Mennica Polska)

Mint of Poland, based in Warsaw, is the best-known mint in the country, with traditions dating back to the 18th century – 1766 is taken as its symbolic founding year. It produces circulation and collector coins for the National Bank of Poland and for a dozen or so foreign central banks and issuers. It also produces investment gold bars.

The mint has won many awards, including Coin of the Year, and created the world's first cylindrical coin, “Fortuna Redux” (2013). For collectors it releases popular series on Cameroon and Niue coins, such as Save the World, Life Cycle of Stars, Amber Route and Spirit Animals.

Power Coin

Power Coin is an Italian numismatic company from Rome, founded in 2009. It works with mints and issuers from around the world and releases its own innovative coins. Its micromosaic coin “Birth of Venus” won the 2019 Coin of the Year award for Most Innovative Coin.

How can you tell who made a coin?

  • Certificate of authenticity – usually names the mint or publisher, the mintage and the coin's specifications.
  • Packaging – the box or case usually carries the brand's logo.
  • Mint mark – some coins have the maker's mark on the obverse or edge (e.g. the Ghost mark on Spectres coins).
  • Product description – at Magikos-Coins we list the producer in the features of every coin.

Does the mint affect a coin's value?

Yes, although it is not the only factor. A reputable mint guarantees quality workmanship, accurate silver fineness and refined details. Coins from well-known brands are also easier to recognise when reselling. Value also depends on mintage, the theme of the series, condition and finishing techniques.
